Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada plans to recognize the state of Palestine in September at a UN meeting.
“We are working with others to maintain the possibility of a two-state solution to not allow facts on the ground, death on the ground, settlements on the ground, expropriation on the ground, so that it is impossible,” Carney said.
Carney said the move was bound by Palestinian authorities’ commitment to reform, including its commitment to reform its governance and Hamas’ “powerless” election next year.

“Israel rejects the Canadian Prime Minister’s statement,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “The change in the position of the Canadian government at this time is a reward for Hamas and undermines efforts to cease fire and release the hostages in Gaza.”
Carney’s announcement came last week when France said it would recognize a state in the Palestinian state, while the UK said it would recognize the United Nations if the Israel-Hamas war had not stopped at that time in Gaza.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Carney ahead of the Canadian announcement, saying recognition of the Palestinian state would “restore the prospect of peace in the region.”

“Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government allowed the disaster to happen in Gaza,” Carney said.
The White House also opposed a decision to recognize the Palestinian state, saying President Donald Trump agrees with Israel’s view of “helpful Hamas.”
“As the president said, if he recognizes a Palestinian country, he will give Hamas a reward, and he thinks they shouldn’t be rewarded,” a White House official said. “So he won’t do that. President Trump’s focus is to get people fed,” he said. [in Gaza]. ”
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to travel to Israel on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gaza. Trump said this week that he hopes to set the center to feed more people in the region.
