Canyon fires exceed 60% due to “good progress” by firefighters

As of Sunday morning, firefighters put out the fire, according to fire authorities.

The fire has stopped 5,370 acres since Friday as it burns near the Castaic, Los Angeles and Ventura County lines.

A fire broke out in a heat wave Thursday, and seven buildings have been destroyed since then. Three firefighters, including Kern County Fire Chief James Agee, were injured when his pickup truck rolled over in the Romero Canyon area of Castaic on steep terrain.

The evacuation order for 2,700 residents was lifted on Friday.

As of Sunday morning, the fire brigade continued to monitor the canyon fires as hot temperatures and potential wind gusts still reach 25 miles per hour.

Two homes were found Saturday, according to Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Andrew Dowd.

Later today, some of the 1,100 firefighters engaged in the canyon fire can be released to deal with other incidents.

“We continue to be vigilant. Surveillance, patrol and ensure the fire is not moving. Today’s mission is to really strengthen the containment line.”
