Carney, Trump meets on Monday when leaders gather in Canada for the G7 summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney will sit down with U.S. President Donald Trump for a one-on-one meeting Monday morning before the Alberta (G7) leaders’ summit officially begins.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the bilateral sitting was 9 a.m. local time, and it was Canada and the United States’ efforts to reach a new agreement on trade and security, but no agreement has been reached.
Everyone’s eyes are focused on whether Carney and Trump speak directly or sometimes informational conversations, whether they can make further progress.
In an interview aired on Sunday Western DistrictDominic Leblanc, the minister in charge of Canadian trade, led the negotiations with the Trump administration, said Canada’s ultimate goal is to get Trump’s penalties taxes to be removed.
He said progress was not fast enough, but warned that economic retaliation could soon be achieved if no deal was reached.
“Our hope is that we will make greater progress before the president arrives in Alberta for the G7. We are not at that best position,” he said.
“If we conclude in a short time, obviously, we are not close to the deal, then the country will consider taking further measures to oppose double the tariffs on steel and aluminum.”
Canada will host G7 leaders at Kananaskis for the annual summit and hold formal discussions on global issues on Monday and Tuesday. Ukraine’s global economy and war are high on the agenda.

Starmer in the UK meets Carney in Ottawa
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer went to Ottawa on Saturday to meet with Carney for direct negotiations ahead of the G7 summit.
The meeting marked the first bilateral seat with foreign leaders since Carney became prime minister in March.
The two leaders had dinner at the official Carney residence in Redo Cabin and later participated in an NHL hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Starmer said the conflict between Israel and Iran would be the “center” of the Kananaskis talks.
Carney and Starmer held a formal meeting on Sunday, and the two reached a new Canada-UK partnership on trade, science and technology and security, according to a joint statement from the office.
The agreements include a new working group on deepening trade relations – signs of progress following the suspension of negotiations on the new trade agreement in early 2024, leaving behind an interim agreement signed after Brexit.
Canada and the UK will also apply artificial intelligence tools to national security through a partnership with Canadian AI company Cohere, which will “formulate their commitment to building cutting-edge data centers in Canada,” the joint statement said.
The company’s CEO Aidan Gomez met with Carney and Starmer on Sunday, and in his statement he said it would work with the Canadian government to make public services more efficient and productive while seeking AI solutions in defense, security and research in the UK
Canada and the UK will also invest $5.7 million in five years to combat the common “common good network fund” to combat digital transnational repression and $14.8 million for joint biomanufacturing research and development, leaders announced on Sunday.
Starmer told reporters on Sunday that both Commonwealth countries are thinking and working, and their long-term and historic link to economic and security affairs is “now and now.”
“I have learned a lot from the Prime Minister over the years, I am his awesome, and the governmental and international values he brings to him, especially when we go to Kananaskis for the G7, we will be promoted.”
Steamer said that in addition to the topics of discussion that have been announced, the conflict between Israel and Iran will become the “core” of Kananaski.
Leaders will travel to Calgary separately later on Sunday, with Kani meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa before heading to Kananaskis.
In addition to Albanes and Ramaphosa, Kani also invited leaders from India, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil and NATO to attend the summit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also meet with the G7 and invite leaders at a working breakfast Tuesday, focusing on the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to the official G7 timetable, Monday’s working meeting will focus on global economic and security matters, while Tuesday will also see meetings on energy security.
Carney said Canada’s priorities as president of the annual summit include strengthening peace and security, improving shared response to wildfires, strengthening critical mineral supply chains, and strengthening the use of artificial intelligence to stimulate economic growth.
The G7 includes the United States, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada, and the European Union.
