Dentists are sharing what they avoid doing on their teeth at all costs

Regular brushing, flossing and dental dentist – We all know the pillars of good dental hygiene. But knowing them and maintaining them are two things. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 50% of people have signs of gum disease and 26% of adults have untreated cavity.
It’s not uncommon to have teeth or gum problems, and dentists say that certain lifestyle factors may be behind your oral health problems. In fact, common behavior can negate the benefits of good oral hygiene – you may be guilty of some of them.
Below, we talked with the dentist about what they suggest that you never do your own dental wear habits and behaviors:
1. They don’t chew ice.

“For me, the first thing I think of is chewing ice,” said Dr. Natalie Peterson, associate professor at the University of Minnesota dental clinic.
“A lot of people haven’t considered it, but they chew on ice in a drink and they just don’t think about the damage it can cause,” she said.
Peterson notes that ice can break teeth because it is not only difficult, but also cold. This can be especially harmful for those with fillers. “The idea of chewing on the ice makes me tremble,” she said.
2. They don’t bite their nails.

According to Dr. Jennifer Soncini, associate clinical professor of pediatric dentistry at Boston University, nail biting can cause dental problems. Also, nail biting is often a habit, which means your teeth have to deal with this action repeatedly.
Soncini explains that when you bite your nails, you wear out the enamel on the edges of your teeth. Enamel plays a number of important roles – it helps protect teeth from cavity, erosion, infection and sensitivity to cold, hot or sweets.
3. They did not open the bag or bottle with their teeth.

It seems harmless to open a bag of fries or a bottle of water with your teeth, but the dentist says it is not.
“Tooths are strong and durable, but they are not about opening the top of the bottle, tearing the package or chewing on hard objects,” Dr. Jarrett Manning, a comprehensive cosmetics and implant dentist at JLM Dental Studios, Georgia, told HuffPost via email.
It puts unnecessary stress on your teeth. “Utilizing teeth in this way can cause pain, fracture or rupture teeth, root canals and even teeth that require extraction,” Manning added.
4. They avoid fudge candy.

Candies as sticky as gummy worms, gummy bears and peach rings are items that dentists avoid. Why? Socini said they can get stuck between the grooves of the teeth and the teeth, which can lead to cavity. They can pop the stuffing, too.
Apart from the gummy candy, Peterson says she especially avoids Sour Gummy.
“I kind of think these are bad triple links. They’re sticky, they’re super sugary, and they’re really acidic – that’s why they taste sour.”
5. They don’t eat too much alcohol.

It is well known that drinking too much alcohol is not suitable for your liver health, cancer risk, or sleep quality. Manning says excessive drinking is also bad for your teeth.
“Alcohol can cause dryness in the mouth and reduce saliva production, and because saliva works to help cleanse the mouth, protect teeth and neutralize acids, the reduction in saliva increases your risk of getting tooth decay,” Manning said.
6. They don’t use toothbrushes that are too hard.

Peterson said she recommends a soft toothbrush for several reasons.
She explains that hard and midbrain toothbrushes “can cause abrasions to your gums, so they can cause more recessions, which can be difficult to repair once they occur.” Overall, toothbrushes with bristles or midbrain may abrade your teeth, she says.
7. They don’t smoke.

“I will never smoke or use tobacco,” Manning said. “Not only can smoking cause serious health problems, it can also cause serious oral health problems, tooth deformation, and in extreme cases, oral cancer.”
Smoking is a habit of quitting smoking, but there are resources to help you achieve this. If you don’t smoke, don’t start for oral health and beyond.
8. They won’t jump out of daily dental hygiene.

This may not be surprising, but dentists say skipping brushing and flossing is the main taboo.
“Flossing with brushing every day is key to fighting gum disease,” Manning said.
Additionally, Socini said brushing teeth at night is very important.
“Never, never brush your teeth and go to bed,” Socini explained. “You can not brush your teeth all day, but if you don’t brush your teeth before going to bed, it’s the worst mouth.”
Slecni said going to bed with a clean mouth prevents bacteria from growing overnight.
9. They won’t miss a date from the dentist.

“I will never ignore my routine dental checkups, either,” Manning said. “Routine dental checkups are essential to maintain oral health and capture dental problems early.”
Regarding how often you should go to your dentist for routine checkups, it depends on your personal dental history and other issues.
“Regular examinations of patients should be tailored to each patient and their risk factors and their overall dental health,” Peterson said.
Peterson continued: “Some people may only need to be once a year, they may be healthy; many people, twice a year is a good idea; some people have risk factors or dental problems, they may need to be three to four times a year.”
