Lorenzo Musetti sealed a top-five breakthrough with a double-meaning victory in the BOC Hong Kong Open semi-finals on Saturday.

The Italian top seed used a gritty performance to defeat former champion Andrei Rublev 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 to reach his ninth ATP Tour final. Musetti, who is chasing his first title since winning two titles in 2022, has jumped to a career-high No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and secured a top-5 spot on Monday.

“It was a pretty good match, I don’t think I’ve ever played anything like it in Hong Kong,” said Musetti, who tied Rublev 1-1 in the Lexus ATP Head-to-Head Series. “It’s an unbelievable level. Every time I raise his level, in the end, I raise it [mine]. So I’m happy to be in the finals. “

Musetti is awaiting a championship match against second-seeded Alexander Bublik or Marcos Giron. Musetti, 23, also joins compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in Sunday’s doubles final.

The key moment against Rublev in the semifinals was Musetti’s serve at 3-4 in the second set. According to Infosys ATP statistics, he saved two break points during a lengthy hold, deuce six of them, to stay in contention and eventually swung the match in his favor late in the third game.

Musetti, who made his Nitto ATP Finals debut last year, will become the third Italian in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings to reach the top 5, after Adriano Panatta (1976) and Jannik Sinner (2024).
