A trip to China helped Alejandro Tabilo breathe his belated life until his 2025 season.
The top 19 players in the former PIF ATP ranked won the quarterfinals of the Chengdu Open 6-4, 6-3 win on Friday afternoon. After testing in the first eight months of 2025, during which time he fought the table and suffered wrist and abdomen injuries, the Chileans have been clearly excited since October last year.

“It’s been a very tough year for me, so I’m glad to get the pace back a little bit and hopefully it’s a start,” Tabilo said in a 7-13 season, in a court interview. “Just keep rolling, but very happy with the victory.”
Two-time ATP champion Tabilo showed signs of his best form when he arrived in China earlier this month when he competed in the ATP Challenger Tour final in Guangzhou. In Chengdu, he won two qualifying matches against Te Rigele and Lloyd Harris, and then sent Jordan Thompson in the first round to defeat Roland Garros’ first tour champion.
He chased only his second-place top 50 wins of 2025 after defeating Novak Djokovic in April at Monte-Carlo, with the 28-year-old Tabilo Outit Darderi 21 in Friday’s clash with 32 winners. According to the Infosys ATP statistics, he converted the two breakpoints he won into four breakpoints he faced to improve to 2-1 in the Lexus ATP Head2head series with Darderi of Italy.
“I think that’s just the body. I’m from [three] Continuous matches [here] I played a challenger last week, so it was just a recovery, just a way to stop it,” Tabilo reflected. “I know Luciano is doing very well, so I just have to be there, stay steady, and I’m so happy to be backing me with the team here. ”
Next, Tabilo will face Chengdu’s Christopher O’Connell after the Australian beat Week 6-2, 6-4. In the final game of the day, Brandon Nakashima ended the championship defense of #NextGenatp’s favorite Shanghai Juncheng with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, ending China’s interest in singles.
The fourth seed Nakajima now makes his personal best ATP Tour quarterfinals of the season. His opponent will be Marcos Giron, who beat the eighth-seeded Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-4.
