Corentin Moutet thwarted late Daniil Medvedev’s hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals at the Erste Bank Open on Thursday, seeking revenge on the 29-year-old in Vienna to reach the quarter-finals.
The Frenchman lost to Medvedev in the Almaty final on Sunday but ensured he would not suffer further pain when he faced the 29-year-old at the ATP 500 in Austria four days later. Mutai played with his signature style, getting a tight first set before recovering from a service failure at 5-3 to advance 7-6(3), 6-4.
Medvedev won his first title in more than two years in Almaty. He climbed to 12th place at the PIF ATP Live Event in Turin following the tournament, but his latest defeat means he faces an uphill battle to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. The 2020 year-end champion is 925 points behind eighth-placed Lorenzo Musetti, who competes in Vienna this week. Medvedev will next travel to Paris to compete in the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Moutei, who drew 2-2 in his Lexus ATP head-to-head series with Medvedev, will next face Musetti or Thomas Martin Echeverry in his fifth tour quarterfinal of the season. The 26-year-old Mutai is currently ranked 36th in the PIF ATP Rankings, a career high.
In the first match of the day, Matteo Berrettini defeated Cameron Norrie 7-6(6), 6-7(9), 6-4 and advanced to the Vienna quarterfinals for the fourth time. The Italian faces third seed Alex De Minaur in the quarter-finals. Alexander Bublik also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-2. Bublik saved all six break points against Cerundolo and won four ATP Tour titles in 2025, according to Infosys ATP Statistics.
