Lorenzo Musetti was undeterred by an unexpected change of opponent at the Bank One Open on Tuesday, as the Italian easily beat Hamad Mededovic to kick off his ATP 500 campaign.

Fourth seed Musetti faced Stefanos Tsitsipas in Saturday’s draw in Vienna, but the Greek was forced to withdraw with a back injury shortly before the match. The 2023 Next Generation ATP Finals saw PIF champion Mededovic step up as the lucky loser, but Musetti put an end to the Serbian’s strong run with a brilliant 79-minute performance.

“Although it was a late switch, I certainly think I managed to focus on my own thing and what I have to do when I step on the court,” Musetti said after his first Lexus ATP head-to-head meeting with Mededovic. “I thought it was a solid performance. Nothing special, but definitely what I need in these moments, to stay consistent and stay focused.

“My attitude was very good today after a bit of a nervous start. It was a good reaction and that’s what we’re focusing on and then I think the tennis will come.”

Musetti now faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round after the Argentinian defeated #NextGenATP star Nicolai Budkov Kjaer 6-3, 6-3, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, with a 39-17 record on the season. Musetti, currently ranked eighth heading into Turin at the PIF ATP Live event, will be looking to go deeper in Vienna to increase his chances of making his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Andrey Rublev’s outside hopes of reaching a sixth consecutive Nitto ATP final suffered a major blow when the seventh seed was eliminated early in Vienna. Cameron Norrie used a fast start and a fast finish to defeat Rublev, ranked 15th in the live event, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2 and tie the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 3-3.

Home favorites Filip Misolic and Francesco Cerundolo were also first-round winners in the Austrian capital on Tuesday. Wild card player Misolic defeated Camilo Hugo Carabelli 7-5, 7-6(6) to set up a showdown with third seed Alex de Minaur. Misolic has moved up nine spots to No. 86 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings after reaching the second round on home soil, taking him past his career-high No. 92 in next Monday’s PIF ATP Rankings.

Argentina’s Serendolo defeated Alex Michelsen 6-3, 6-1. He will next face eighth seed Alexander Bublik for a spot in the quarterfinals.
