Sony bought a Bandai Namco to boost engagement in the anime fan community

Sony announced that Sony has established a “strategic business alliance” with Bandai Namco Holdings and has acquired 2.5% of Japanese media conglomerates and game publishers for an investment of 68 billion yen ($465 million). Sony said the goal is to expand the fan community’s “IPs like anime and comics around the world and to strengthen…engage…especially in the anime field where the market is expected to grow rapidly”.

The two companies noted that they have historically collaborated in areas such as gaming, animation and music, but planned to expand it to “a wider field.” Bandai Namco specifically calls for “the production and distribution of anime and other video content and the sale of merchandise.” In other words, both companies may want to join the current (successful) trend of creating series and movies from video games and other content. According to the press release, they plan to develop and promote new IPs in the anime and comics districts.

The agreement is in line with what Sony recently said to be aimed at maximizing its content value in the gaming and entertainment ecosystem. Obviously, converting video game IP to movies and series has proven to be very profitable, from the franchise Minecraft arrive Mario Bros. arrive Our last one.

Bandai Namco added that the companies plan to provide “the best products and services at the best time” in the best regions. In other words, it will focus more on certain areas than other areas according to demand. Hopefully we can expect to release some announcements around new content in the near future based on the Bandai Namco IP.
