The earthquake split into Carlos Alcaraz from coach Juan Carlos Ferrero Ferrero himself was shocked.

Hours after Alcaraz announced their split, former world No. 1 Ferrero published a post on Instagram, candidly admitting that he didn’t want to separate from current world No. 1 Alcaraz.

“I hope I can continue,” Ferrero posted on Instagram.

The pair’s surprising end comes just days after Ferrero was named ATP Coach of the Year for the second time in the past four years.

“Today is a difficult day. Hard to find the right words,” Ferrero posted on Instagram. “It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially when there are so many shared experiences behind it.”

The split comes a month before Alcaraz will compete in his Australian Open for the first time and become the youngest man in Open Era history to complete a career Grand Slam.

Ferrero, 45, thanked Alcaraz for the time they spent together while expressing regret that the partnership ended.

“Despite the difficulties, we are an incredible team and I believe you will continue to have great success,” Ferrero posted on Instagram. “I hope I can continue. I believe good memories and good people will always find a way to meet again.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

During their highly successful partnership that spanned more than seven years, Ferrero took Alcaraz from talented teenager to world number one.

The 22-year-old Alcaraz has won 24 championships, including 6 Grand Slam titles, rose to world No. 1, and earned more than $57 million in prize money from his partnership with former world No. 1 Ferrero.

“It is very difficult for me to write this article… After more than seven years together, Juanchi and I have decided to end our time together as coach and player,” Alcaraz said. “Thank you for making my childhood dream a reality. We began this journey when I was just a child and you have been with me on an incredible journey throughout this time, both on and off the court. I have thoroughly enjoyed every step of the way with you.

“We managed to get to the top and I feel that if our paths in sport have to diverge, it should start there, from where we have always strived and always aspired to be.”

Ferrero’s former coach Samuel Lopez officially joined Alcaraz as coach last December and is now expected to take over as head coach of the defending U.S. Open champion.
