Argentina accuses former president Alberto Fernández of corruption

Buenos Aires, Argentina (AP) – Argentina’s prosecutor formally accused former President Alberto Fernández of irregular behavior when signing insurance for the public sector during Thursday’s government.

However, federal judge Sebastián Casanello allowed Fernández to remain free while opposing the case of the former left-wing leader.

This is the second case since Fernández stepped down, but the first case is related to so-called corruption. Earlier this year, he was accused of causing gender violence against former first lady Fabiola Yáñez.

In the insurance case, prosecutors are accusing Fernández of negotiating with the holding of public office, which could be sentenced to one to six years in prison.

Casanello also ordered the freezing of about $11 million in Fernandez assets.

The judge, under his order, noted that in December 2021, during his presidency, Fernandez issued an ordinance that forced the entire public sector to sign specifically with Nación Seguros SA, an insurance company led by Alberto Pagliano, a friend of Fernández.

This has brought huge growth to the company.

Fernandez did not immediately comment on the case.

In this case, there are about 33 people with names.
