Epic Games' Fortnite returns to the US Apple App Store after nearly 5 years

After nearly five years of ban, the popular multiplayer shooter “Fortnite” has returned to Apple's App Store.
Fortnite is produced by Epic Games (backed by a US studio backed by Tencent, China).
They have had a legal battle with Apple since 2020.
Epic Games claims that the tech giant's commission fees violate U.S. antitrust rules, up to 30%.

Fortnite was immediately successful when it launched in 2017.
It's free, but allows players to buy in-game currency that can be spent on things like the appearance of the character.
The currency's payment system (called V-Bucks) bypassed Apple's commissions, resulting in an App Store ban.
At the time of the ban, Epic had only 116 million users on Apple's platform.

Fortnite's return to the United States Apple iOS system followed a federal judge's ruling in late April.
It said Apple violated a U.S. court order that requires the company to offer greater competition for app downloads and payment methods in its app store.
Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for Fortnite to return to its App Store, while Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney posted a offer on social media platform X, “We Back Fam.”
