Alex de Minaur notched his 50th tour victory of the season at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, defeating Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-2 to reach the ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals for the seventh time.

De Minaur is the third player to reach 50 wins in 2025, following Carlos Alcaraz (67) and Taylor Fritz (50), and the Australian has a tour-leading 37 wins on hard courts. De Minaur was confident and in control against Borges, hitting 19 winners and making just 10 unforced errors to claim victory in one hour and 47 minutes in the pair’s first Lexus ATP head-to-head match.

De Minaur’s last best season in 2024 ended with 47 wins and two titles, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. After lifting the trophy at the ATP 500 event in Washington in August, the 26-year-old is seeking his second title of the year in Shanghai, where he will next meet Daniil Medvedev or #NextGenATP American trainee Tian.

De Minaur arrived in Shanghai after playing in the semi-finals in Beijing and his recent performances have further boosted his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals. The 10-time tour-level champion is ranked seventh at the PIF ATP Live Event in Turin, 740 points ahead of 10th-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime, who became the first player to be left out of the top 8 when ninth-ranked Jack Draper misses the rest of the year with injury.

De Minaur, who makes his debut at the prestigious year-end event in 2024, will move up to fourth in the live race if he captures his first 1000m Masters title in Shanghai.

Earlier, Arthur Rinderknech reached the quarter-finals of the Masters 1,000 meters for the first time, defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6(5), defeating world No. 3 Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6(5). The Frenchman rose to No. 43 in the PIF ATP live rankings, joining his cousin Valentin Vacherot in the quarter-finals. After the win, Lindeknech penned a message of support for qualifier Vaccello, the first Monegasque player in history to reach the quarter-finals of the tour.
