From controversial comments to sly remarks from exes, the leader of the “Golden Bachelor” has caused a sensation.
Mel Owens was the ABC series’ lead in April, and he was surprised when he admitted his plans to cut any women “60 and 60 and older”.
The retired NFL star’s ex-wife Fabiana Pimentel gave a clear warning to women who are fighting for his attention.

“Good luck. I mean, it’s going to be bad,” Pimentel, 20 years younger than Owens, told the Daily Mail. “But, no matter what, I don’t want to be involved.”
Appearing in “In the Troops” podcast In June, Owens opened up the age limit he asked for before the show.
“That’s blind until they left the limousine. But they asked me, ‘What’s your preference?’ So I’m just saying 45 to 60, just tell the truth,” he said. “And then I got selected, am I got selected? “Oh, Mel, you can’t, you know, this isn’t a “silver bachelor.” This is the “golden bachelor”. “But they’ll be hot, don’t worry,” he said.
In the first season of the show, the ladies compete for Gerry Turner’s heart from 60 to 75 years old. However, at the time of shooting, Turner was 72 years old. Owens is 66 years old.
Additionally, Owens said he hopes the contestants are in good shape.

“I don’t have a resume, but they asked me, what is my profile like?” Owens said. “Well, they have to be healthy because I keep in shape. [They] Should exercise and stuff. I told them, you know, try to stay away from artificial butts and wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right?
“Well, I don’t think there’s a faux hip or a wig there, right? Because I know there are great women out there.”

“Is it illegal to suddenly have a dating preference?” one user wrote on X.
Franchise host Jesse Palmer told Us Weekly: “Obviously, I’ve seen the headlines because I’m on social media. We haven’t started shooting ‘Golden’ yet, so I haven’t spent a lot of time with Mel. I know I’ll be with him soon.”
Owens was born and raised in a closely-connected Midwest family in Detroit, and Owens changed from the NFL to a legal career in the 1980s, according to the press release.

“It was during this time that he met his first love, and they had two sons together,” Release noted. “Although life changed unexpectedly with the death of his father and the end of his marriage, Owens conveyed his energy to him who might be the best father, focusing on raising his son and mentoring their extracurricular sports team.”
According to the media, Owens and Pimentel have been married for 17 years, and then Pimentel filed for divorce in 2020. They shared two adult children.
Pimentel married Owens in 2002, citing irreconcilable differences. According to reports, the divorce was finalized in 2024.

Despite rumors that ABC has taken Owens as leader due to a sudden rebound, Fox News numbers learn that he is still the next “golden bachelor.”

According to the show’s website, Owens “prepare to rediscover love rooted in simple pleasures of company – sharing everyday moments of life, making plans for the future, and becoming stronger around a couple… He longs to meet those who share this vision and eventually find a perfect teammate who has been waiting for him in his golden age.”
