Fabian Marozsan won the season’s career-best Tour title at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, where he defeated Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka to enter the second round 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
The Hungarians won 23 wins in 2024, but surpassed that with victory in the ATP Masters 1000 event. According to Infosys ATP statistics, Marozsan won 83% of his first ball points and converted to 40-year-old Wawrinka at his third match point, with his goal to be the oldest Masters 1,000 champion in the series’ history (since 1990).
Marozsan has good memories in Shanghai and reached the quarterfinals in 2023. The 25-year-old arrived in Beijing’s quarter-finals last week and fell to Jannik Sinner. His best result this year was to play the semi-finals at the ATP 500 in Munich. Marozsan will meet Taylor Fritz in the second round.

Earlier, Adrian Mannarino overcame former world sixth Matteo Berrettini 7-5, 7-6 (5) to enter the second round. The French have performed well on tough courts in recent months, in the U.S. Open and in the fourth round of the Cincinnati. He will next play Francisco Cerundolo.
First-half-finalist Marin Cilic advanced, lowering Georgian qualifiers Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 7-6 (5). Cilic reached his final four games in Shanghai in 2017, breaking a six-game winning streak with victory. Cilic met Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Serbs lead the Croatians 19-2 in the couple’s Lexus ATP Head2head series.
Sebastian Baez beat the family’s favorite Zhang Zhizhen 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, while David Goffin overcame Alexandre Muller 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-1. Zhang entered the fourth round of Shanghai in 2023, which is the best performance of a Chinese man.
Zizou Bergs beat Sebastian Korda 6-4, 7-5, Daniel Altmaier defeated Tristan Schoolkate 6-3, 6-4, while Jordan Thompson eliminated August Holmgren 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Danish qualifiers. Altmaier will play Jannik Sinner in the second round. Jaume Munar and Luca Nardi won three sets. Munar defeated Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Nardi defeated Sebastian Ofner Ofner 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
