Kerala rain: IMD issued an orange alarm in five areas; dam shutters opened as water levels rise

The heavy rain continued to soak Kerala, and the IMD issued an orange alert to five regions: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad. In these areas, heavy rain is expected to be between 11 and 20 cm in the next 24 hours. River levels have risen due to heavy rains and ruins have occurred in low-lying areas, and several families have been relocated in the state.

As the water level rises, the dam shutters are opening to regulate inflow. On Saturday morning, the shutters of the Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad and Moozhiyar in Pathanamthitta were opened. In Thrissur, the shutters of Peechi Dam are planned to open in the afternoon to prevent another spill.

Palakkad is also on high alert, with the shutters of Kanjirapuzha, Malampuzha and Meenkara dams already open due to rainfall in the catchment area. In Idukki, everyone’s eyes are on the Mullaperiyar dam. As PTI reported, the water level hit 135.70 feet at 10 a.m., which is only reported by PTI, which will trigger the opening of its blinds.

What sets the dam apart is that despite its location in Kerala, it was run by Tamil Nadu, but signed a 999 lease in 1886.
