Flavio Coboli and Matteo Berrettini led Italy to a third consecutive Davis Cup final in Bologna on Friday, with Coboli producing a sensational performance in a 2-0 win over Belgium.
Berrettini gave Italy an early advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Raphael Collignon before Coboli turned the night into a spectacle inside the Super Tennis Arena. The 23-year-old beat Zizou Bergès 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15) on seven match points, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
“It’s really hard to say anything about this game,” Coboly said. “We fought for our country, fought for this win, but in the end I achieved my dream. We are now in the final… I played for my team, my family and it was one of the best days of my life.”

Coboli shredded his shirt in celebration after winning a marathon deciding-set tie-break that included saving all seven match points to help two-time defending champion Italy advance and avenge his only Davis Cup defeat (at the hands of Burgess during last year’s round-robin stage). He now leads the Belgian team 2-1 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series.
Berrettini, the former PIF ATP No. 6 player, played a key role in Italy’s title run last year, winning his seventh consecutive singles title at the event. They are now the first country since Australia in 2001 to reach three consecutive finals.
Italy awaits the winner of Saturday’s semi-final between Spain and Germany, both of whom enter this stage after winning crucial doubles deciders. Italy has won 13 games in a row and aims to become the first country since the United States in 1971 to win three consecutive Davis Cup titles.
