A man on Florida’s death row is scheduled to be executed next month after he convicted of kidnapping a woman from the insurance office and killing her.

Kayle Bates, 67, is scheduled to be executed on August 19 in Florida’s 10th execution this year.

Bates was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted to be linked to the June 14, 1982 death of Janet White, 24, in Bay County.

According to the case summary of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, he was accused of kidnapping White from the state farm insurance office and then taking her into the woods behind the building, trying to rape her, stab her, and tearing off the diamond ring from one of the fingers.

According to court records, Bates is a deliveryman at a Tallahassee paper company, delivering at least one delivery in the insurance office.

While White was resting for lunch, he broke into the insurance office and waited for her to return.

Last year, the Florida Supreme Court rejected an appeal against jurors in its initial trial. The U.S. Supreme Court also denied the June 30 petition.

Bates’ attorney James Driscoll Jr. said he would file a further appeal to the case.

“We believe his execution will violate the U.S. Constitution,” he told the Associated Press.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Bates’ death order on Friday, and just three days later, Michael Bell, the state shot and killed two people outside the bar in 1993, as part of an attempted killing.

Bell is the eighth place to be executed in Florida this year, with ninth place scheduled to be held later this month. The state killed six people in 2023, but only one died last year.
