Former Georgia Governor Lieutenant Jeff Duncan hinted that he might run for a higher Democratic Party after announcing his departure from the Republican Party.

Duncan, who served as a Republican lieutenant from 2019 to 2023, said he was considering running for a higher office after he revealed his shift to the Democratic Party earlier this week and decided that his political future could emerge in the coming weeks or months.

“I think Georgians want people who can tell the truth to be in power in the middle,” he told the media.

He did not specify which higher position he might seek, but it is speculated that he might launch a campaign to replace Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who Duncan served as Duncan during his tenure as Lieutenant Governor.

Famous names in the 2026 election gubernatorial campaign include former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who later worked in the Biden administration, on the Republican side – current Georgia Governor Bert Jones and state attorney Chris Carr.

Duncan wrote in a column in the Atlanta Daily Constitution published Tuesday that his path to becoming a Democratic Party has begun before the president Donald Trump Trying to overturn former President Joe Biden’s losses in the 2020 presidential election.

“My journey to becoming a Democrat started with Donald Trump trying to steal Georgia’s 2020 election,” Duncan wrote in the newspaper.

“There is no date on the calendar or online,” he continued. “It shows that my political heart has changed the exact moment, but that has happened.” “My decision is focused on my daily efforts to love my neighbors as Republicans.”

Trump responded to Duncan’s party shift, saying the former lieutenant governor was a “complete loser” and no longer wanted in the Republican Party.

“Former Georgia Governor Lieutenant Jeff Duncan is a loser,” Trump wrote Friday. “Never did anything, all he did was complain. We no longer wanted him in the Republican Party, so I was told he was a Democrat. Good riding Jeff. You don’t even have a chance!!!”

Duncan pointed to several policy issues that played a role in his decision to change the party, criticizing Republicans for dealing with issues such as health care, Medicaid, gun safety, immigration, and how to help the poor.

He wrote that his time in the office taught him the best way to “love my neighbors” is through public policy. Prior to his tenure as a lieutenant, he served in the House of Representatives in Georgia from 2013 to 2017. He chose not to participate in the 2022 re-election of the deputy governor.

Duncan’s decision to leave the Republican Party came after the Georgia Republican Party expelled him from the party for suspected infidelity. The party’s resolution lists his endorsement of Biden in the 2024 presidential election, once he quits, his endorsement of former Vice President Kamala Harris and allegedly undermines and sabotages some efforts Republican candidateincluding Jones and 2022 Senate candidate Herschel Walker.

The former Republican also spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August to support Harris.

“Geoff Duncan finally speaks out loud enough to anyone who has known for years: He’s a Democrat,” Georgia Republican chairman Josh McKoon told WSB-TV.

Duncan has been a voice critic of Trump and the Republican Party in recent years, especially since the president overturned the losses of the 2020 election and the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

“There is no line or moment on the beach. It’s a series of parallel processes. One person’s mind and soul are attracted by Donald Trump and those who follow closely behind.”

Duncan wrote in his column that the Trump-backed spending bill signed into law last month would be “in confusion as” as it cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the administration’s plans. He also criticized the reductions in supplemental nutrition assistance programs, commonly known as food stamps, and the impact on ensuring children are not hungry in school.

He also noted that polls showed support for gun control measures, such as universal background checks and red scope laws.

The former publicist also criticized the Trump administration’s massive deportation immigration policy, saying “has become a lesson about how not to love neighbors.” Immigration policies should focus on protecting borders and deporting people who have committed felony crimes, but should create a way to create citizenship for other immigrants in the United States, he said.

“The list of reasons why I’m now a Democrat continues to grow,” Duncan wrote. “Best of all, my decision puts me in the best position of loving my neighbors every day.”
