Former professional baseball player dies in an attempt to save swimmers from South Carolina
A former professional baseball player and three-year-old father died Sunday while trying to save swimmers from a tear electric current on the South Carolina coast.
Chase Childers briefly signed with the Baltimore Orioles to enter the water at about 4:45 p.m. to help a group of four to five swimmers struggling with Pawleys Island, about 45 minutes south of the current coastal area Myrtle Beach, according to the Pawleys Island Police Department.
“He died in an attempt to save others,” the police department said.
According to police, Childers were the only missing swimmer when authorities arrived at the scene. His body was recovered at around 6:15 p.m. after a search was carried out by officials, fire officials and members of the U.S. Coast Guard.
According to the league, the Childers are a Major League Baseball player and were selected for the Baltimore Orioles in 2009. Tear currents are powerful water channels that are often seen in all coastal areas of the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote on its website, noting that these currents can move at a speed of 8 feet per second.
According to NOAA, swimmers risk drowning while trying to return to shore while fighting Rip Current. The National Weather Service warns that they are the deadliest and most common swimmers face in North and South Carolina waters.
“Weekend, weekend drowning reports are sad. We pray for our family and express our condolences.”
He said the town “urges alertness to water and ocean currents at any time, especially during high surfing.” Henry added that a town council on Pali Island would assess ways to reduce future drowning risks, including by tearing the current to visitors and its potential threats posed.
He added: “While Palli Island Beach has been rated as the best beach on the entire East Coast, we also hope they are also called the safest one.”
