Cerundolo & Etcheverry put last year’s Davis Cup final on alert in the ocean of orange

Argentina leads the Netherlands 2-0 in Dutch soil; Germany leads Japan 2-0

Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry made their second straight appearance in the Davis Cup final on Friday, making their second straight appearance in the Davis Cup final.

Etcheverry defeated Dutchman Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-4 to convert his fourth game into a victory. Then Argentina’s highest-ranked player, the world’s No. 21 Cerundolo, then beat Botic Van de Zandschulp 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Cerundolo won his 33rd Tour title of the season in front of a passionate crowd in Groningen, according to Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. There were six servings in the first set alone, but the Argentinian led 4/0 in the game, which ultimately helped him gain a set advantage of his family’s favorite.

2016 Davis Cup champion Argentina will hope to have the final touch on Saturday.

“It’s incredible,” said Daviscup.com. “I played very well. It’s really important to get the first point.

“I’m very proud because I know what I’ve done in the past few weeks and how to train for it. It feels great. I love it. The Davis Cup is really fun and I love playing here.”

The Netherlands reached the Davis Cup final in 2024, but Italy won 2-0.

Germany leads Japan
In other Davis Cup qualifiers, Germany led Japan led by Jan-Lennard Struff and Yannick Hanfmann led 2-0. Struff, who ranked 21st in the PIF ATP rankings, fought Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4, and went 6-4 in a tough conflict, during which the Germans saved all 10 breakthrough points he faced. Hanfman ended the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Shintaro Mochizuki.

France and Austria have a lead
France led Croatia 1-0 after Corentin Moutet beat #NextGenatp Dino Prizmic 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to win his first Davis Cup Cup title. Marin Cilic and Arthur Rinderknech will meet in the second rubber. Jurij Rodionov surpassed Fabian Marozsan with 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5, giving Austria a 1-0 advantage over Hungary. When he faces Lukas Neumayer, Marton Fucsovics will seek a draw for his homeland.
