Gael Monfils announced that he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season.
The Frenchman is one of the most popular and charismatic stars of the ATP Tour since its debut, and the Frenchman has canceled 13 Tour trophys and climbed to a career-high sixth place in the 2016 PIF ATP rankings.
“I first had my rackets for two and a half and started professional competitions at the age of 18,” he wrote. “Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday a month ago, I want to share that it is about to be my last year as a professional tennis player.
“The opportunity to turn my passion into a career is a privilege I cherish in every game and moment of my 21-year career. Although this game means the world to me, my decision to retire at the end of the 2026 tennis season has given me great peace of mind.”

Even in his 22nd year as a professional, Monfils remained a champion contender for the ATP Tour. According to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, he was 18-15 in the 2025 season, the focus of Auckland’s title in the year. In his post, he thanked his team members, fans, French Tennis Federation, fellow and his parents as well as his wife WTA star Elina Svitolina and their daughter Skai.
“It’s never like a good time to say goodbye when you really like something,” Monphelis wrote. “But 40 is the right time for me. Of course, it’s incredible to win another title before I finish it. Honestly, my only real goal for the next year is simple.
“Enjoy every minute and play every game like my last game.”
