German Interior Minister visits Israel to hold talks with Kats’ Netanyahu
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt traveled to Israel on Saturday for an unexpected visit.
The minister plans to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Sunday.
The spokesman said it was also planned to meet with Defense Minister Israel Katz and Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.
“Supporting Israel involves holding talks on the ground and understanding the situation,” Dobrindt said. “I want to show that we support Israel as the closest companion to the fight against terrorism.”
The minister, who served in Friedrich Merz’s administration last month, also hopes to benefit from Israel’s experience in military and civil defense. He said the two belonged together.
“Israel is ahead of us, especially in cyber defense and civil protection,” Dobrindt said before his visit. “We also need to adapt more to new threat situations.”
“We will work closely with Israel,” the minister said. “Germany needs a cyber dome!”
The term refers to a powerful digital shield against espionage and sabotage, which will also protect critical infrastructure such as energy and communications companies.
Dobrindt from the Bavarian-only Christian Social Union (CSU) is one of the most powerful supporters of the German government.
Although Meers and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticized the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza, Dobrind firmly reiterated his support for Israeli support for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group.
