Germany’s Meers says Ukraine’s EU membership is still long

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz once again undermined hopes of Ukraine’s rapid entry into the EU, warning that the process could take years.

“Our priority right now is to do everything possible to end this war,” he said at a meeting with Romanian Presidents Nicuș and Dan on Friday.

Meers said that after that, talks will begin to rebuild Ukraine. It will be a process that will eventually lead to Ukraine becoming a member of the EU, but he said: “It will take several years.”

Ukraine has been a candidate for EU membership since 2022 and hopes to be admitted to the EU quickly.

As long as Ukraine is under attack and under a state of war, “it is almost impossible to join the EU.”

However, its aim is to bring the country as close as possible to the EU and to tie Ukraine to its communities.

Ukraine has been defending the Russian invasion for more than four years.
