An experienced Spanish side dug deep to eliminate young Czech talent in a thrilling Davis Cup quarter-final clash in Bologna on Thursday afternoon.
Jakub Mencic and Jaume Munric won singles for their respective countries to end the quarterfinals 1-1, while Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez sealed victory for Spain by defeating Tomas Machak and Mencic 7-6(8), 7-6(8) in an exciting doubles match.

The 39-year-old former PIF ATP doubles No. 1 Granollers and the 28-year-old Martinez saved three set points in the first set tie-break and two set points in the second set tie-break to achieve a decisive victory. The victory was sealed when #NextGenATP Mensik double-faulted 8/9 under pressure in the second-set tiebreak, ensuring Spain’s advance to Saturday’s semifinals against second-seeded Germany or Argentina.
The 20-year-old Mensik defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5, 6-4 in the first singles match, and then Jaume Munar defeated Jiri Lehka 6-3, 6-4 to equalize the score. The stage for the doubles showdown has opened. Six-time Davis Cup champions, Spain are in the semi-finals for the first time since winning their most recent title in 2019.
