Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsakis extends support for India-EU FTA

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, extending his warm wishes on his birthday on September 17. Prime Minister PM Modi “expressed his heartfelt thanks for the gesture”.
The conversation also reaffirmed the growing momentum in India-Greece relations, which were elevated to a Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Athens in August 2023. Both leaders “welcomed developments in bilateral relations across sectors such as trade, investment, technology, shipping, defence, security, connectivity and people-to-people ties, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-Greece Strategic Partnership,” said the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Support India – EU FTA
During the conference call, Mitsubishi guaranteed Greece’s full support for the early conclusions of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) underscored the importance of mutually beneficial trade relations. He also conveyed Greece’s encouragement for the 2026 AI Impact Summit hosted by India.

“Prime Minister Mitsubishi conveyed Greece’s support for the early conclusions of the mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement and provided success for the success of the AI Impact Summit held in India in 2026. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues that are mutually beneficial. Leaders agreed to stay in touch,” the PMO statement.
Develop strategic partnerships
The two countries share deep-rooted historical and cultural ties and are strengthening cooperation in areas such as defense, maritime security, transportation, technology and connectivity. Greece and India also worked closely on multilateral forums to advocate democracy, freedom, rules-based international order and respect international law and human rights, including UNCLOS.
In February 2024, Mitsubishi paid a state visit to India, which is the first time a Greek government head has visited India in 15 years. The visit further incorporates the cooperation of the Central Eastern European Economic Corridor (IMEEC) to promote trade and connectivity between India and Europe in areas such as energy, logistics, technology, ports and infrastructure.
