Henry Patten still has a chance to win the Nitto ATP Finals with partner Harri Heliovaara, but the Briton has secured the win of a lifetime this week.
On Sunday, the day before Patten plays his first game of the season finale, he got engaged to his long-time partner Ellie Stone.
“Ellie and I have been together for almost 10 years,” Patten told ATPTour.com. “It’s going to come at some point, and as a tennis player, I don’t get to see her that much all year long. This is one of the trips she chooses to go on.”
Patten received the ring during Wimbledon and has been waiting for this special moment ever since, keeping an eye on Turin. The 29-year-old arrived a day ahead of Stone and scoured the city for the perfect spot. He eventually discovered the Cathedral of Superga, which offers views of the city.
“Somehow it was really quiet there. Went there in the morning and it was such a beautiful day, and then I asked her to look at the chimney and made up an excuse and proposed,” Patten said. “She was very, very happy, I’m happy to report. And [she was] Surprised, I think that gave me bonus points. “

The doubles standout played college tennis at the University of North Carolina Asheville, where he met Stone on the football team. They’ve been together ever since.
It’s difficult for them to spend time together year-round, as Stone is in her second year of residency at North Carolina.
“Officially, she’s a doctor, but she’s getting full medical training there,” Patten said. “She doesn’t have a lot of downtime and she can’t travel a lot. She can’t do her job remotely. She’s in the hospital all the time.”
As excited as Patten is, he will need to quickly refocus before taking the court with Heliovara on Monday against Christian Harrison and Evan King in the opening game of the year-end tournament.
“I was more nervous about getting engaged than my first game,” Parton said with a laugh. “I can tell you for free.”
Heliovara and Patten have a 1-1 record in the John McEnroe group and still have a chance to advance to the semifinals. The Englishman hoped to get as far as possible in Turin, but whatever happened he would leave the city with his head held high.
“This is a big deal to me, more important. We’ve been together for ten years and I’m going to spend the rest of my life with her and I’m very excited about that,” Patten said of the engagement. “It’s crazy because obviously it’s the biggest [tournaments]but it takes up quite a bit of back seat. That being said, we still take tennis very seriously. “
