Holger Ruhn delivered a high-risk, high-reward tennis masterclass at the BNP Paribas Nordic Open on Friday as he made his way back to the semifinals in Stockholm.
The top seed and 2022 champion belied a mistake-strewn start and late injury scare with a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the indoor hard-court ATP 250 event.

Despite making 19 unforced errors in the first set alone and taking a medical timeout on his left thigh in the deciding set, Rooney fired 59 winners in his third semifinal of the season.
“Honestly, not good,” Ruane said when asked about his condition. “But I’m glad I was able to finish. I couldn’t have done it without all of you great fans. My left leg was really struggling, but the energy was special.”
As the PIF ATP Turin Live heats up, Rune intensifies his bid to return to the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time since 2023. The Dane currently sits 11th in the standings, but he could regain that position if Casper Ruud beats Sebastian Korda later on Friday.
Rooney was in trouble after losing three games in a row 0-3 in the deciding set and going into the medical timeout with a bandage on his thigh. But he fought back with fearless groundstrokes to beat the patient Echeverri and deny him a first-ever hard-court semifinal.
The 22-year-old lifted his second ATP Tour trophy in Stockholm in 2022 and currently has a 7-1 record at the event, according to Infosys ATP Statistics. He will next face fourth seed Ugo Humbert, who previously defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-7(3), 6-0, 6-3.
Humbert has won 13 of his last 14 indoor court events, highlighted by his run to the final at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris last year and his victory in Marseille in February. Rune leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head series 5-0.
