Holger Rune approached Tuesday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters 1000 champion in nearly three years, where he overcame the Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-7, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3.
Dane, who won his sole Masters 1,000 titles in Paris in 2022, must be patient with Mpetshi Perricard. Runes scored just 27% (17/63) on the Frenchman’s serve, but after two hours and 30 minutes, they scored two crucial breaks in the game and reached the quarterfinals. The five-time Tour-level titration list is now leading the 32nd seed 2-1 with the couple’s Lexus ATP Head2head series.
“I managed to break him twice. He was doing very well today,” Rune said. “He also showed his level with Fritz, he was a player who was very hard to beat this surface. It was much better today. Today I was very happy with my mentality. I stayed there. I stayed there, I was a little frustrated, I lost the second set, but I lost the second set, but I came back and settled on the third set and managed to hold my nerves.”
Rune’s best result at this level in 2025 was in Indian Wells, who lost to Jack Draper in the final. To continue his game this week, the tenth seed will be in the next match at Tallon Griekspoor or qualifiers Valentin Vacherot.
Rune ranked 12th in the PIF ATP live match and is currently behind Lorenzo Musetti, the eighth-alive in Shanghai. Runes will show the championship in the Hard-Court event and will rise to 3,290 points. The 22-year-old aims to appear in the Nitto ATP final for the second time on the 2023 circular stage.
In the first game of the day, Zizou Bergs saved two match points, crossed Canada’s Gabriel Diallo 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8) and reached his Virgin ATP Masters 1000 quarter.
The 26-year-old recovered from splurge on the decision makers’ 4-1 lead, saving game points 6/7 and 7/8 in the third set before winning his third game two hours and 49 minutes later.
After the game, Bergus was asked if it was easier to save the match points or convert one of his chances.
“Well, maybe it’s the guy who saves (game points) because that’s what he serves,” Bergus said. “It’s easier to finish the game while serving than trying to save the game when he returns. But it’s really hard in the end. He didn’t give me any free points. All the game points I really had to look for.
Bergs joined David Goffin (2016, ’24) in Belgium, reaching the quarterfinals with the 1000 Masters and 2nd place in Shanghai. He is ranked 38th in the PIF ATP Live rankings and will rise to a career high on Monday. To keep himself running, Bergus can meet Novak Djokovic in the last eight games. The Serbian played Jaume Munar later on Tuesday.
“It means a lot, and you probably see it in my reaction,” Bergus said. “It’s amazing, I feel like my trajectory is a little different, my road speed is different. I’m 26 and my career keeps reaching my career. I know it’s not just UPS, but I’m also frustrated this year, but I’m really curious about my potential bringing me.”
