Jannik Sinner overcame the panic of the midfield against Terence Atmane at the China Open on Saturday, where he eventually broke the resistance of the French qualifiers and won a second round of 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
The Italian beat Atman in the semifinals in Cincinnati with relatively easy ease last month, with the Frenchman showing breakthroughs in the last four games. However, Beijing’s number one seed was pushed higher in the ATP 500 event.
After losing the first set, Atmane broke Sinner’s hit rate three times in the second set, often placing the world second with his depth and precision. However, the 23-year-old was unable to make his sixth loss to the season in Sinner, who improved his aggressiveness in the decision-maker, eventually advancing for his 13th straight time after two hours and 22 minutes.
The former Beijing champion defeated Marin Cilic in his first game since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the U.S. Open final. The Italian ranked No. 1 in the PIF ATP rankings for his defeat against the Spaniard, but his goal is to keep pace with his rival Alcaraz to compete for PIF honors for the first place at the ATP year-end for the rest of the season. He trails the 22-year-old, who plays in Tokyo, scores 2,540 points in the PIF ATP live match in Turin.
Sinner won his last 61 games to win his game in the top 10 and hopes to extend the game when he met World No. 57 Fabian Marozsan in the last eight games. Marozsan defeated Alexandre Muller 6-3, 7-6 (5) to reach the quarterfinals.

Earlier, Alex de Minaur crossed Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2) to block his position in the Beijing quarterfinals. According to Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, the Australian has won 33 hard wins on the Tour this year and is now 15 wins in the 2025 ATP 500, with only Alcaraz (17) winning more.
De Minaur won the championship at the ATP 500 in Washington in July, ranking eighth in the PIF ATP live game, taking over the final qualifying round. The 26-year-old aims to win the Nitto ATP final for the second consecutive year. Next in Beijing, he will meet the seventh seed Jakub Mensik or Frenchman Arthur Cazaux.
