Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Coboli led Italy to a historic third consecutive Davis Cup title on Sunday, winning in front of a raucous crowd in Bologna against Spain.
In the first game, Berrettini had a perfect performance and defeated Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4, giving the Spanish team a perfect start. Coboli then bounced back from seven losses in his first eight games against Jaume Munnar to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, sending the Italian bench and the Bologna crowd into wild celebrations.
Italy also won the 2023 and 2024 Davis Cup finals in Malaga, becoming the first country after the United States (1968-1972) to win three consecutive titles.
Berrettini ensured Italy got off to the perfect start in Sunday’s final with an impressive serving performance. The 29-year-old blasted 13 aces and faced no break points en route to a 79-minute victory, according to Infosys ATP statistics. The 56th-ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings has won his last 11 Davis Cup matches since 2022.

Italy were pinning their hopes on Coboli, with the 23-year-old showing great courage after a slow start against Munnar. After losing the first set and immediately losing serve at the start of the second set, Coboli scored a crucial break to tie the score at 1-1. He then forced the tie into a deciding set on the seventh set point of the second set, and found a key breakthrough in the 11th game of the third set. Coboli had a memorable week at home, saving seven match points in his semi-final victory over Belgium’s Zizou Berges.
Spain is participating in its first Davis Cup final since winning the title in 2019. The former champion defeated Germany and the Czech Republic in the final.
