The biggest stars are usually scheduled to play under the lights of the ATP Tour at night, but rarely two great players who play in the same game.
Shanghai night ticket holders at the Rolex Shanghai Masters may want to see Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic at Sunday’s night meeting, with the second and fifth player in the PIF ATP rankings in the second half of the scoring. Instead, these lucky fans will have the chance to see the game’s two giants.
Djokovic will open with the German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann at the couple’s second Lexus ATP Head2head meeting at 6:30 pm local time. The match will be Sinner’s 27th-seeded Tallon Griekspoor, with Italian bids extending his perfect record against the Dutch to 7-0.
“I’m still early in my career, but I’m happy to be playing after Novak. It’s great for fans and it’s great to watch some good tennis in two games,” Sinner said.
The double bill comes at the right moment, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, which was originally built to host the Nitto ATP final in 2005-08 (then the ATP World Tour final). The stadium has a retractable steel roof that rotates and closes. After closing, the roof resembles the official blooming magnolia in Shanghai.
With Sinner and Djokovic going to the same meeting on Sunday, they may face off in the same match in the ATP Masters 1000 event. If two players win three more games, they will meet in the semifinals. The potential meeting will be their 11th Lexus ATP Head2head Showdown; Sinner has won 6-4 in his last five games, including this season with Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
