Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz etched their names into an exclusive list of German tennis history at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday.
Kravitz and Putz became the second all-German pair in the history of the ATP Masters 1000 series (since 1990) to win the doubles title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Andre Goransson and Alex Michelson in the championship match in China. Who are the players they’re adding to that roster? Former PIF ATP No. 1 Boris Becker and former World No. 2 Michael Stich were a pair of standout singles stars who together won the 1992 Rolex Monte Carlo Masters doubles crown.

“We don’t put ourselves in the same category as these two guys by any means,” said Putz, 37, after lifting his second Masters 1000 crown (he also won the 2021 Rolex Paris Masters with New Zealander Michael Venus).[My first Masters 1000 title] Very special. In fact, Michael Stitch sent me a text after that first text. I didn’t know him at all, but he was very, very nice to me. He sent me a really nice message after I won in Paris.
“It’s not great to be with Kevin, but it’s definitely different to win a championship with a fellow countryman… We’re actually real friends and that goes for our team as well. We see each other even when we’re not playing. So it’s very, very nice to share that. Obviously, it’s nice to win, but also to share the losses. I think all in all, we’re happy with this stage of our careers and our life together in those moments.”
Kravitz and Putz converted three of eight break points in Sunday’s final, according to Infosys ATP Statistics. They led 3-1 in the second set, but soon got their second decisive break in the seventh game, eventually claiming victory in 83 minutes.
Kravitz and Putz advanced to the Shanghai championships by dropping just one set, moving up one spot to sixth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Team Ranking. They are in a good position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals and lifted the trophy last year.
“We made it to the semifinals, and after the semifinals I was certainly happy to make it to the final,” the 33-year-old Kravitz said during the Shanghai match against Putz. “Of course, you want to win the final. Of course, there are some tense moments from time to time, so I have to figure out how to deal with it.
“In the end everything is going in the right direction, very happy, very proud. Now let’s enjoy this moment.”
