Kobe and Jaina died at the age of 41 and 13, respectively, which also claimed the lives of seven other people in a helicopter crash. Prior to the basketball game, the plane was heading to the late NBA star Kobe’s Maba Sports Academy.

When Kobe founded the Mamba Sports Foundation in 2016, Vanessa has since changed its name to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, which focuses on the positive impact of underserved male and female athletes.

Vanessa sued Los Angeles County for infringement and negligence after employees of the sheriff’s office and fire department took and distributed photos of the helicopter crash. In August 2022, she received $16 million in compensation. The following year, she settled nearly $29 million, all of which were donated to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.

The businesswoman also honored her late daughter more than a year after Kobe and Gianna’s death in May 2021.

Vanessa and Kobe got married in April 2001. Together with the late daughter Gianna, the couple shared their daughters Natalia (born January 2003), Bianka (born December 2016) and Capri (born June 2019).

After widespread rumors claiming Vanessa was pregnant with her fifth child in early 2025, she went to social media and kept the record. She shared a meme Rihanna Swimming on snorkeling, carrying a drink, flip the middle finger, and with the title: “I protect my peace, I’m not pregnant, I’m not happy all summer.”

She shared various photos of her eldest daughter, Natalia, graduated from the University of Southern California in May 2025.

That same month Vanessa continued her charity by launching a Gianna Bryant scholarship to honor her late daughter.

“Backed by the variety show Boys and Girls Club at Boyle Heights @varietibgc, we have chosen great young people who embody Gigi’s Mamba mindset through resilience, commitment to equal opportunity, and the ability to inspire others,” she shared via social media. “For our recipients, you are the representative of Gianna’s vision – creating a world where young people have the opportunity to follow their dreams regardless of gender or the pressure and expectations we are under from society. Send all our love to you and your bright future.”
