For Lorenzo Musetti, the situation is simple: if the Italian wins the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Greek Championship, he will qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

While Musetti is pleased with his season so far, the player ranked ninth at the PIF ATP Live Turin event is eager to secure the ATP 250 trophy, overtake eighth-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime and earn a spot in Turin.

“It’s been a great season so far. If I look back at all the achievements and goals we’ve achieved this year, it’s the most important season of my career so far,” Musetti told ATPTour.com. “Of course, there’s a goal in what I’m saying. We’ll see what happens after this week, but I’m here for that goal and to try to take that position.”

Musetti is not shy about achieving his goal of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. On the one hand, he really wants to make it to the year-end championship. But Athens’ second seed knows he must find a balance between his desire to qualify and overthinking his chances.

“It’s not easy. I try not to think too much about calculations, but I know I have to win in Turin to be guaranteed,” Musetti said. “Our goal is always to win games, so the goals don’t change too much.

“Of course it’s going to be a difficult week because there are a lot of players who are very strong in that area. I’m going to try to take it one game at a time and think about it like any other game.”

Having said that, Musetti said he is “excited” for this week’s match, which will be against either Stan Wawrinka or Botic van der Zandschulp.

“Now it’s a mental game as well as a physical game. In Paris, it didn’t go well,” said Musetti, who lost to Lorenzo Sonego in his opening match at the Rolex Paris Masters. “I took a few days off to recharge my batteries and hopefully it will be better here.”

everything adds up

Musetti has been to Greece before and participated in youth competitions here. But this is his first trip to Athens and he hopes it will be an unforgettable trip.

“I played in the arena this morning and tried it out. It’s really cool, really big for 250 people. I think it’s really, really good and hopefully it’ll be really crowded,” Musetti said. “It is a beautiful city with many historical monuments that I would like to visit if I have the chance.

“It’s also a good opportunity for us to get through the final week [with points counting towards the Race]. this will be the last year [this week] It will count towards the main draw because starting next year, the Paris Masters will be the cut-off date for the main draw. Let’s make it count this week. “
