Lorenzo Musetti was forced to test at the Chengdu Open on Saturday, but the top seed and defending finalist showed his perseverance and talent to maintain his title.
On its first outing since entering the U.S. quarterfinals two weeks ago, Musetti overcame #NextGenatp talent Dino Prizmic 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, and competed in the China ATP 250 in two hours and 16 minutes. Prizmic matched Musetti’s 27 winners to his fearless shooting, but the Italian found extra gear in the decided match to speed up the victory.

“I started with a little bit of nervousness today, but it was normal, it was my first game in over two weeks,” Musetti said. “The first game in China was always tough… Compared to last year, the opponent was different, his performance: he was very stable, so I had to find my own way, and in the third set I started playing better and with the lead in the game.”
Prizmic ranked fourth in the PIF ATP live competition, and Prizmic competes in Chengdu through the next-generation accelerator that provides more opportunities for players aged 20 and under to participate in the ATP Tour.
Musetti aims to make his debut in the Nitto ATP final this year, where he finished eighth in the PIF ATP live match and is now just 25 points behind seventh-place Alex de Minaur. Entering Chengdu’s third quarterfinals, the 23-year-old Italian will next face the qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Musetti improved the 6-2 Championship record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Musetti tied Grigor Dimitrov for the most quarterfinals (3) and Shang Juncheng and won the biggest win in tournament history (6). He was the best seed of last year, but fell straight to the week.
“Even before even starting the game, I said my goal was to get revenge from last year,” Musetti said. “It was a great game for me, but hopefully this year will get better, and it’s a good start.”
Musetti’s quarter-final rival Basilashvili continued to beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-2, 7-6 (4) in his first Lexus ATP Head2head beat the Americans (1-3) in his fourth attempt.
Qualification Taro Daniel also made progress on Saturday, bringing third seed Tallon Griekspoor to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win and its first ATP Tour quarterfinal since Auckland last January. He ranks 159th in the PIF ATP Live rankings.
