Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos strengthened their bid for a maiden Australian Open title by reaching the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The third-seeded team – the highest-ranked team in the draw – defeated the Brazilian pair of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos 6-3, 6-4. Granollers and Zeballos, who won their first two major trophies at the French Open and US Open last year, will next face sixth seeds Christian Harrison and Neil Skupski at Melbourne Park.
Harrison and Skupski have both competed in the Nitto ATP Finals with different partners, and this is only their second time competing together. The American-British pair defeated Petr Nouza and Patrik Rikl 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals.
In the first half draw, Luke Johnson/Jan Zelinski defeated fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo/Matt Pavic 7-6(5), 6-2. They created three of four break points against the former world No. 1 and reached a major semifinal for the first time as a team, according to Infosys Stats.
They will face Australian wildcards Jason Kübler and Mark Polmans, who defeated 12th seeds Sadio Doumbia and Fabian Reible 6-4, 7-6(3) on Tuesday. Kübler partnered with Linky Hijikata to win the 2023 Australian Open title, defeating Hugo Nice and Zielinski. Polmans returns to the Melbourne semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
