Italy reached their fourth consecutive Davis Cup semi-final on Wednesday, beating Austria on the back of thunderous cheers from their home fans and confident performances from Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Coboli.

The tone inside the Super Tennis Arena in Bologna was set early and the two-time defending champion responded with the assurance of a seasoned contender.

Former PIF ATP No. 6 Berrettini defeated Yuri Rodionov 6-3, 7-6(4) to give Italy a 1-0 lead. The second set was briefly delayed due to court lighting issues, but the Italian fought back from 2-5 down and saved three consecutive set points on serve to take a 4-5 lead and dominate the tie-break.

Coboli then stepped up to the plate and sent the home fans into a frenzy with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Filip Misolic in his third Davis Cup match. With the victory, Italy extended their winning streak to 12 games and will face Belgium in Friday’s semi-finals.

Berrettini’s influence remains crucial as Italy claim their fourth Davis Cup title. Last year, he didn’t drop a set and compiled a perfect 6-0 record — five singles wins and one doubles win — to lead his country’s title run.
