Dalibor Svrcina won the biggest ATP Tour career win at the Lynk & Co Hangzhou Open on Thursday, where he rejected Italian’s comeback Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3.
His debut since Wimbledon’s first round exit, Berrettini can’t stand the 22-year-old Czechman’s fearful hit in the Chinese ATP 250 event. Despite losing in the second round of qualifying one day ago, Svrcina seized the opportunity of a lucky loser and finished 10 career-high No. 89 in the PIF ATP Live rankings.
“Obviously, I’m not a favorite to play in this game, so I just want to come here and enjoy and play freely,” Svrcina said. “I lost those qualifications yesterday, so I’m glad I had the opportunity to play again and I think I got the most out of it.
“Matteo is an incredible player, he’s here [back] Injured… Apparently he isn’t where he wants to be, but I’m very happy with the victory today, the biggest game of my career. ”
According to Infosys ATP Stats in the 85-minute battle, Svrcina hit 17 winners backed by rock-fixed defense and swift court reports and saved the only breakthrough point he faced. His reward: a second round of conflict with Buyunchaokete or Zhang Zhizhen.
Berrettini, who had shown signs of rust after two and a half months of layoffs earlier this year in Miami, Dubai and Doha (including his first victory against Novak Djokovic) had seen signs of rust after two and a half months of layoffs, met 15 unforced errors in his teenage girl Lexus ATP Head 2’s match against Svrcina.
In the second day in Hangzhou, Tomas Martin Etcheverry eased his 20th Tour victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 record, becoming Francisco Cerundolo’s second win (33). Etcheverry is waiting for the qualifiers Rinky Hijikata or fifth seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
