Mexico says “no sign” of carrying drugs comes from El Salvador, diplomatic spit

San Salvador (AP) – The Mexican government clarified that “there is no indication that it intercepted aircraft containing cocaine originated in El Salvador, according to a letter published by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele.

The letter posted by populist leaders on social media platform X comes after the outbreak of diplomatic drama between Buckler and Mexican officials when the head of Mexico’s security said authorities believed a plane from El Salvador.

The claim angered Buckley, who recalled the Salvador ambassador to Mexico and demanded corrections to the Mexican government. Buckler puts most of his popularity on his difficult crackdown on crime.

He answered the assertion of the word “false” on the post on X, which went on to detail the so-called flight paths of the plane. Berkler also pointed out that the three people arrested by the plane were Mexican citizens.

Mexico’s security chief Omar García Harfuch withdrew from his original statement that the plane originated in El Salvador and later said that Mexican authorities picked up the plane on radar as they passed through the capital of El Salvador, despite its distance. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that she would not have a dispute with her El Salvadorians.

On Friday, a letter from Bukele – apparently written by the Mexican Foreign Minister to the Embassy of El Salvador – clarified that there was no clear evidence that originated in Central American countries, and “no one was involved in the incident.”

The letter dated July 11, and asked to answer “other questions that may arise on the subject” to preserve the relationship between the two countries and expressed its hope to “strengthen the exchange of information to avoid similar situations in the future”.

Buckley said he thanked for the clarification. El Salvador’s presidential office did not confirm whether the country would send its ambassador back to Mexico, noting that “the president will decide.”
