Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat of Minnesota, made headlines earlier this week as it was the only democratic vote in the state legislature to vote to repeal health insurance for taxpayer-funded adult illegal immigrants.

“I know people will be hurt by this vote, and I-we’re very hard at trying to get a budget deal that doesn’t include that rule,” she said. Republicans hold the House of Representatives as 67-66, and Democratic Peasant Party hold the Senate 34-33.

Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot dead on Saturday and were hospitalized after the surgery. Hotman’s husband also died in the shooting. All four victims are assumed to be shot dead by suspects who pretend to be police.

According to Alpha News, Hoffman voted against the proposal, but Gov. Tim Walz is expected to sign it into law as part of the budget agreement. Four state senators also voted for the repeal.

Although it is believed to be politically motivated, as of Saturday afternoon, the specific motives are unclear. The Minnesota Patrol posted a photo to X on Saturday showing the “No King” sign in the suspect’s vehicle. “No King” is the name of a series of protests that took place on Saturday in an opposition to the Trump administration.

“In view of the overnight target shootings by state lawmakers, we ask the public not to participate in today’s planned demonstrations in Minnesota out of caution,” the MSP wrote.

Tragedy led to information on both sides of the aisle.

Trump posted to the Truth Social on Saturday: “I have had a horrible shooting in Minnesota, which seems to be an attack against state lawmakers.” “Our Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI are investigating the situation and they will prosecute anyone to the maximum extent of the law. In the United States of America, this horrible violence will not be tolerated. God bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly good place!”

“Our state has lost a great leader,” Gov. Tim Walz said in a news conference after the shooting.

“Speaker Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor and a sense of service. She was a formidable public service, a fixture, and a giant in Minnesota. She woke up every day determined to make this state a better place. She is irreplaceable and will be missed by so many Minnesotans,” the Democrat and former 2024 vice presidential nominee continued.
