Miomir Kecmanovic earned his first career top-five win on Wednesday, defeating world No. 4 Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) at the HSBC Telecom de Mexico.
The 26-year-old entered the tournament with an 0-11 record against players in the top 5 of the PIF ATP Rankings, but played some of his best tennis against the 2021 champion to reach the quarterfinals.
“It feels great, especially because it’s been a rough couple of years,” said Kekmanovic, No. 84 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “So I’m happy that something is finally going my way.”
Kekmanovic hit the backhand confidently and took advantage of Zverev’s deep return position, opening up the court and holding his ground against the German’s usually reliable two-handed backhand. Zverev ended up making 17 unforced errors on his backhand, while Kekmanovic had only six.
“I think I was more aggressive when it mattered. My serve was much better than my usual standard, so I’m happy that things went well today,” Kekmanović said. “Obviously he’s the favorite so there’s no pressure on me there, but you still have to play well when it matters and finish the game and thankfully things went my way.”
The Serbian improves his record to 2-2 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series and is the 24-time tour-level champion. After reaching the ATP 500 hard court quarterfinals, Kekmanović will face French left-hander Terrence Altman for the first time. Atmane defeated wild card player Rafael Jodar 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
In other matches, fifth seed Flavio Cobolli defeated Dalibor Svrcina 6-4, 6-4. According to Infosys ATP statistics, Coboli won 86% (37/43) of his first serves and saved all six break points he faced.
