The New York Times News Front urged the New York Times to show “greater transparency and accountability” after employees were forced to plead with management for explanations about the sudden redistribution of four prominent critics.
The ordeal began last month when Chief Theater critic Jesse Green, Chief Pop Music critic Jon Pareles, TV critic Margaret Lyons and music critic Zach Woolfe were reassigned to other departments. This prompted union cultural workers to write a memorandum to Times executive editor Joe Kahn, who assistant executive editor Sam Sifton and culture editor Sia Michel said they were “shocked and deeply concerned” by the decision and asked a meeting to understand its implications.
Times leaders responded when they met with some staff last week, but the guild wanted Kahn and other times leaders to show more clearly.

“As a unionized newsroom, our Times Guild members have a right to speak up for the work they produce. This is just one of the essential protections our contract provides to Guild members. We sincerely hope Times management demonstrates greater transparency and accountability to our members on the culture desk going forward, as well as at the bargaining table when we return for contract talks later this year. We are closely monitoring as this situation unfolds,” NewsGuild of New York President Susan DeCarava told Fox News Digital.
Semafor first described the meeting as a “teny”, and the era insiders agreed with this description.
“Kahn repeatedly stressed that critics were not removed due to performance issues, but he said this article hopes to bring ‘fresh views’ to the critic’ role.”
Fox News Digital declined comments when it posted.

Last month, Michel announced changes to Era employees.
“We are in an extraordinary moment in American culture. A new generation of artists and audiences are bypassing traditional institutions, and smartphones have made fanatics more forgiving because they make culture more accessible than ever before, and art institutions face challenges and look for new opportunities,” Michel wrote in a Memo obtained by Fox News Digital. ”
“Our readers help them understand this complex landscape not only through traditional reviews, but also through papers, new story forms, videos and experiments with other platforms,” the cultural editor added. “Our task is to be these guides. I’m making some changes to the department’s tasks as we do.”

Michel called the four reassigned critics “the best class” and said the Times will “share news about their new roles.”
“I know these are big changes. Although the way the newsroom has long been to change the roles of journalists, editors and directors, bringing different ideas and experiences into important rhythms and coverage areas, our critics have much less lineup. However, our scope expands traditional commentary and we will expand our core perspectives within the core scope that helps us.
