“Number of Killed” in the Vancouver Philippines Music Festival, cars dumped into the crowd

Officials said a driver drove cars into the crowds on Saturday night's street festival celebrating Philippine heritage in Vancouver, killing and hurting many.

“Many people were killed and the driver was injured after driving into the crowd,” the Vancouver Police Department wrote in a statement on X.

It said the incident happened after 8 p.m. local time.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle was detained.

Videos of event organizers on Instagram showcase lively cultural dances and song performances throughout the day, with several food trucks and market stalls on both sides of the street.

There were many families with children among the participants.

Reuters photos after the incident showed paramedics and ambulances at the scene, showing police.

Prime Minister Mark Carney mourned the dead and was injured in a statement on X, saying the fierce attack was “terror.”

He wrote: “I express my deepest condolences to the Filipino Canadian community and to everyone in Vancouver and to everyone in Filipino community and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you.”

The mayor of Vancouver also expressed condolences.

Ken Sim wrote on X: “I was shocked and deeply saddened by this horrible event at today's Lapu Lapu Day event.”

“Our ideas are with everyone affected and the Filipino community in Vancouver are in this extremely difficult time.”

Sim said he will provide more information about the incident.
