The fourth seed of Pegula burned talented compatriots An Li 6-1, 6-2 The quarterfinals have been opened to the United States for the third time in the past four years.
Pegula dialed her drive from the start, intimidating Li’s service, pulling six out of nine to win 16 of the opponent’s second serve 20 points respectively.
It was Pegula’s first quarterfinal since Pegula swept over Iga Swiatek, winning the June Bad Homburg title. The difficulty of the quarterfinals will rise significantly.
Pegula’s next clash with two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova or doubles world number one Taylor Townsend.
Lee’s frustrated 16th seed and former Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic won seven of her final eight games, including her reaching the Cleveland final earlier this month. While the world’s No. 58 player is playing some of her best tennis, Pegula sets the level of debuting in the fourth round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium today.
Pegula once again beat a flat backhand and returned to the championship after nine minutes of the game, breaking into 3-0 again.
