Poland doubles South Korean tanks with $6.5 billion deal

Warsaw, Poland – To expand the tracking convoy of the country’s army, the Polish Ministry of Defense has ordered 180 K2 Black Panther Tanks of 81 vehicles from the Hyundai Rotem of South Korea. The deal is worth approximately $6.5 billion.
The contract was signed today at Gliwice in Poland, and he is officially visiting Poland in the presence of U.S. Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-Back.
Under the plan, tanks will be provided to the Polish armed forces between 2026 and 2030. Among them, 116 tanks will be produced in the K2GF version produced in South Korea, while 64 cars will be purchased for the K2PL variant.
After a South Korean factory built the first three K2PL units, Poland’s defense industry will take over the manufacturing activities of the remaining 61 tanks in the version. Bumar-łabędy, a subsidiary of the state-owned PGZ Group, will handle its production.
“The new unit will be better than the existing unit and will be launched next year. From 2028 to 2030, we plan to have full domestic production.”
The latest development marks the second executive agreement to purchase K2 tanks in Poland. In 2022, the country ordered the first batch of 180 rail vehicles. Under the framework contract, Warsaw can obtain up to 1,000 k2, which may make it the main tank used by the national land forces.
The tank deal was held in the financial terms for the contracted South Korean weapons delivery following intensified negotiations between Warsaw and Seoul, guaranteed by the former Polish government.
In addition to the K2 framework agreement, Prime Minister Donald Tusk FA-50 Light Attack Aircraft, K9 Howitzerand Chunmoo transmitter.
Poland has accelerated its efforts to expand its tank fleet after Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine. To benefit from South Korea’s mass production capacity and leniency policy on technology transfer, Warsaw has begun acquiring South Korean defense equipment on a scale, making it a major customer in Seoul in Europe.
