Police identify victims and gunmen in Las Vegas gym

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The person who died in a shooting at a Las Vegas Fitness Center last week was a long-time employee and has no contact with the shooter, police said Monday.

Police said Edgar Quinonez, 31, of Las Vegas, was shot dead at the Las Vegas Sports Club on Friday.

Police said the arrival of officers left the gym after driving 24 rounds to the suspected shooter, Daniel Ortega, 34, after driving 24 rounds. Ortega, a member of the gym, died of gunshot wounds, according to police.

Three other people were injured in the gymnasium on the west side of the city when the gunfire broke out. They were taken to a local hospital, one of which was in critical condition. Their situation was not released on Monday.

Officials are still investigating the motives, saying they found no connection between the two.

Ortega entered the gym with a rifle Friday afternoon, Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said in a media briefing Monday.

She said he approached an employee at the front desk and walked around before briefly exchanging words with another employee. She said, then he lifted his rifle and fled into the gym and shot.

Proser said Ortega followed and continued to fire, and at some point Ortega returned to the hall and fired until the weapon broke down. An arriving officer fired at Ortega when he opened the entrance door and was shot by the officer when he left the building with his rifle. Police said he died in a nearby hospital.

She said Ortega exercised in the gym but there was no contact with the victim yet.
