Belgium beat France 2-0 in the Davis Cup final in Bologna on Tuesday with wins from Raphael Collignon and Zizou Bergès to advance to the semi-finals.
In the first match, Collignon, ranked 86th in the PIF ATP rankings, defeated Corentin Mutai 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 to take the lead for the national team. Bergers then beat Shanghai finalist Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 7-6(4) to give Belgium an undisputed 2-0 lead.
Burgess recovered from a 5-3 serve loss and eventually won the second set tiebreaker after 1 hour and 34 minutes. Belgium secured a spot in the last eight with a 3-2 away win over Australia in the second round of qualifying in September.
Belgium will face two-time defending champions Italy or Austria in Friday’s semifinals. Belgium has reached two Davis Cup finals and reached the championship in 2015 and 2017. The championship game of this year’s event will be held on Sunday.
