Return after more than two hours after service

SpaceX’s Starlink Satellite Internet Service experienced a global power outage Thursday, lasting more than two hours. The report on connectivity issues began around 3:20 pm ET and was based on a descending detector. SpaceX did not confirm the power outage until 4:05 pm ET via a post on its Starlink X account. Services began to come back around 5:30 PM ET, and Starlink’s vice president of engineering Michael Nicolls said the provider had “mostly recovered” at 6:23 PM ET.

Users across the US, Europe, the UK and Asia reported issues on the REDDIT page of the service, and SpaceX even admitted interruptions on the Starlink website. The company hasn’t shared the number of people actually affected, but it could be millions – as of the last Starlink network update, the service has more than 6 million active customers worldwide.

The initial announcement of SpaceX’s ongoing repairs does not explain what caused the power outage or the steps being taken to restore services. “Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing the solution,” the company’s X post said. “We appreciate your patience and we will share the update once this issue is resolved.”

Announced the service’s recovery, Nicolls explained that the power outage was due to “a failure to operate the core network’s critical internal software service” rather than any issue with SpaceX’s satellite constellation or other hardware issues. Nicolls added that Starlink will “cause this problem completely and make sure it won’t happen again.

Starlink is designed to access places that are not accessible to traditional service providers, a common choice between Van Lifer and anyone without traditional internet infrastructure. SpaceX is also working with companies such as T-Mobile to use Starlink to expand smartphone connectivity beyond the scope of traditional unit networks. It is not clear how T-Mobile’s Starlink service is affected by the disruption.

Updated, July 24, 6:30 pm: The article has been updated to reflect that the Starlink service has been restored.
