Ricardas Berankis, Lithuania’s all-time highest-ranked player, announced his retirement from professional tennis via a post on X on Tuesday.
“Today was one of those days that seemed like it would never come, but when it did, it touched me very sensitively and deeply,” the 35-year-old wrote. “I would like to announce that I have made one of the hardest decisions of my life – to end my professional tennis career.”
In 2016, Berankis reached a career-high No. 50 in the PIF ATP Rankings and ended his career with two ATP Tour finals.
“Twenty-five years is more than a number. It is a life path, a childhood dream that I have followed to reach the heights of tennis,” Berankis continued. “This phase was fleeting but left behind unimaginable excitement, struggles, triumphs, painful experiences, lasting memories and acquaintances that stayed with me throughout my life.”
Berankis won the U.S. Open Men’s Tennis Championship and the Orange Bowl in 2007, the same year he rose to No. 1 in the ITF Junior World Rankings. In addition to reaching two ATP Tour finals in Los Angeles in 2012 and Moscow in 2017, he also won a tour-level doubles title with Teimuraz Gabashvili in Houston in 2015.
“There have been ups and downs. These experiences have shaped me as an athlete and a person,” Berankis wrote. “Every story has its beginning and its end… Today I am closing one of the most important chapters of my life, and I do so with peace and gratitude.
“I am grateful to everyone around me – my family, friends, coaches, teammates, sponsors, partners, fans, and everyone who believes in me, supports me, encourages me, and helps me get back on my feet in the most difficult times. My faith and your support are my motivation.”
